Even deeply connected couples often struggle to talk openly about sex—and this isn’t because they’re broken. It’s because most of us never got the tools.
In a 2021 meta-analysis (Mallory et al.), researchers found that quality sexual communication had the strongest links to both relationship satisfaction and sexual satisfaction—more than frequency, self-disclosure, or even compatibility. Yet many people avoid these conversations due to fear of rejection, internalized shame, or simply lacking the language to express what they want.
For queer, kink, and CNM folks, these struggles are often intensified by cultural stigma, trauma, or having their identities pathologized. In therapy, I help clients untangle these barriers and build new language for desire, boundaries, and curiosity—without judgment.
Because healthy sexual communication is a skill. And it’s one that can absolutely be learned.
